Characterization of Hematuria in Pediatric Patients Treated at a Pediatric Care Clinic in Bucaramanga, Santander, Colombia.
Abstract
Introduction: The hematuria is one of the most frequent clinical manifestations of nephro-urological origin in pediatric patients, with a broad etiologic spectrum, from benign to potentially serious diseases according to the population studied. Objective: To determine the sociodemographic, clinical, and etiological paraclinical in pediatric patients treated at a pediatric care clinic in Bucaramanga - Santander. Methodology: Through a descriptive and retrospective study, some records of the patients' clinical history treated because of hematuria in pediatric nephrology outpatient were checked. Outcomes: 125 patients of the pediatric nephrology outpatient, from August 2010 to July 2013, had a confirmed diagnosis of hematuria, 81 (64.81%) accomplished the study. The average age was 7 years old, with predominance in males. The average length of hematuria was 180 days. The most frequent type of hematuria was the microscopic one with 55 (44.0%) and with an intermittent pattern of 24 (43.6%). In 42 patients (33.6%), a renal biopsy was performed. The most common cause of mixed and microscopic hematuria was the thin basement membrane disease, and for gross hematuria was hemorrhagic cystitis. Conclusions: Not finding similar data in Colombian literature, this study provides characteristics of the hematuria in an outpatient limited population and opens the gates for carrying out new comparative studies with other populations; with the purpose of establishing parameters for diagnosis and management.
