How can healthcare personnel be affected by an error made when caring for a patient that results in the generation of a sentinel event?
Abstract
There are many factors in providing healthcare day after day that can endanger the patient’s safety, harming, in some way, the patient's health. According to the scientific journal, British Medical Journal, a study conducted by experts indicates that medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the US, after cardiovascular disease and cancer, with approximately 250,000 annual deaths (1). This worrying situation has been setting off alarms since 1999. In response, the WHO has been issuing a series of policies and guidelines concerning the patient's safety that aim to minimize the main risks and prevent these types of events from occurring.
