Interventions for abuse of older adults in the family context: a systematic review
Abstract
Introduction. Abuse of older adults in the family context has received less attention than other forms of intrafamily violence, and little is known about the most effective ways to intervene in this problem. This study aims to describe the characteristics of intervention programs that report effectiveness in addressing abuse of older adults in the family context through a systematic review. Methodology. This is a theoretical study based on the PRISMA methodology. Four databases were searched: Scopus, Web of Science,
Scielo, and PubMed. Rayyan software was used to organize and systematize the results. The QUADAS
II tool was applied to assess the quality of the studies. Results. Nine intervention programs aimed at addressing different forms of abuse were identified; seven of the nine programs reported effectiveness. Most were randomized clinical trials with blinding and follow-up. The main limitation was the high risk of bias related to study flow and timing; however, the studies reported good quality indicators. Discussion. The characteristics of the intervention programs have improved at the methodological level, incorporating mediating variables such as risk factors (anxiety, depression, caregiver burden) and protective factors (self-efficacy, problem-solving ability), nevertheless few studies conduct long-term follow-up of their impact. Conclusions. Effective programs are characterized by methodologically sound interventions that incorporate mediating variables and implement education and training in coping skills, stress management, self-care, and caregiving skills.
