Abstract

Introduction. Estimating the prevalence of nursing diagnoses is useful for determining a priori the likelihood of these labels occurring in different hospital settings. The objective of the study is to determine the prevalence of nursing diagnoses related to cardiopulmonary function in adults in a high-complexity hospital between October 2019 and December 2021. Methodology. Descriptive study of 250 hospitalized adults in emergency, internal medicine, and general medicine services, to whom a cardiopulmonary assessment tool was applied based on domain 4 (activity/rest) of the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association. Results. Most participants were male (70.8%, n = 177), and the mean age was 52.07 ± 19.25 years. The most prevalent nursing diagnosis was risk of deterioration of cardiovascular function, with 33.5% (95% CI: 27.3–40). The least prevalent diagnosis was risk of decreased cardiac output, with 0.9% (95% CI: 0.01–3.2). Discussion. The findings highlight the importance of nursing in cardiopulmonary health care through the use of specific assessment tools that favor the prevention of complications and collaborative work, allowing early identification of cardiopulmonary deterioration and timely intervention. Conclusions. Focused assessment of cardiopulmonary responses in hospitalized adults enables nurses to identify diagnoses within the activity/rest domain and to develop more personalized and effective care plans that contribute to improving the quality of care and patient recovery.
