The theory of recognition of Axel Honneth as a critical theory of contemporary capitalist society
Abstract
We analyze the scope of Axel Honneth's theory of recognition as a critical theory of contemporary capitalist society. Towards that end, we show how the theory of recognition articulates with the immanent critique of society, and how Honneth attempts to bridge the gaps in the program of the first Frankfurt School. Next, it is shown that the moment of “intramundane transcendence”, distinguished by Honneth, is constituted by a political subject that is determined neither by its class condition nor by its location within the so-called “new social movements”. With this, the “society of contempt” and the corresponding struggle for recognition do not necessarily find their referents in the social struggles that occur in the contexts of advanced capitalist society. Finally, we analyze the scope of the theory of recognition in relation to the emancipatory objectives raised in the first generation of the Frankfurt School.
