Femicide in Ecuador (2015-2021): a subnational analysis of the impact of the Gender Violence Eradication Law
Abstract
This research aims to analyze the impact of the approval of the Organic Law for the Eradication of Gender Violence on the rate of femicides at the subnational level in Ecuador. Through a quantitative research methodology that uses regression analysis with panel data, the problem of gender violence reacted to the formal institutional changes on the trend in the increase in femicides, despite the surge in crime in the country. Beyond the regulatory changes, femicides are explained by cultural behavior and deeper structural conditions of society such as poverty due to unsatisfied basic needs.
