ETA terrorism and its impact on tourism: the singularity of the Ven y cuéntalo campaign
Abstract
This paper examines the impact of terrorism on the tourism sector. Specifically, it shows how this occurred in Spain with the violent actions of the terrorist group ETA. After a discussion of the most relevant literature and a review of what happened in other parts of the world, the impact of the terrorist group on tourism in Spain and the Basque Country is shown. In this regard, the main objective and analysis focuses on showing some of the responses, in the form of campaigns and other strategies, that sought to overcome the negative impact of terrorist activity. Specifically, it studies the case of the ‘Ven y cuéntalo’ campaign promoted by the Basque government (1991-1998) and by its political responsible for tourism, Rosa Díez. The work is enriched by accounts from interviews with political figures who were directly or indirectly involved in Basque tourism during the 1980s and 1990s.
