Population-based Cancer Registry of the Bucaramanga Metropolitan Area: Twenty-Five Years of Development
Abstract
Introduction. Population-based cancer registries play a fundamental role in cancer surveillance, as well
as in the planning, monitoring, and evaluation of disease control activities. This article aims to present
the trajectory and missional processes of the Population-based Cancer Registry of the Bucaramanga
Metropolitan Area. Topics for reflection. In the context of cancer surveillance, the characteristics of
population-based cancer registries and the regulations that support their operation in Colombia, the
background of the creation of the Population-based Cancer Registry of the Bucaramanga Metropolitan
Area, the case definition, its mission critical processes, the methods applied and the indicators used to
evaluate the quality of the data are presented. Ultimately, it highlights the challenges and opportunities
of Population-Based Cancer Registries in the country. Conclusions. The consolidation of the Populationbased
Cancer Registry of the Bucaramanga Metropolitan Area has allowed it to become part of the Colombian Cancer Information System, to advise on the formation and operation of other population-based cancer registries in
the country and Latin America, to participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching functions, as well as in cancer epidemiology research.
