Contributions of the Interuniversity Network on Healthy Ageing in Latin America and the Caribbean (RIES-LAC) to Gerontology and Geriatrics Research in the Region
Abstract
In Latin America and the Caribbean, population aging is no longer a projection but a reality with profound social, health, and economic implications. With more than 76 million older persons today and a projection of 147 million by 2037, the region faces an unprecedented demographic challenge that puts pressure on social protection systems, health care models, and public policies (1).
Countries such as Mexico, Cuba, Costa Rica, Panama, Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile are emerging as key scenarios, not only because of the higher proportion of their aging populations, but also because of the progress (albeit at different rates) in the development of gerontological and geriatric knowledge (2). Given this situation, the production of rigorous, contextualized, and interdisciplinary knowledge becomes a strategic necessity in order to respond fairly, equitably, and effectively to the aging of societies.
