Understanding of the care situation related to the cognitive and emotional state, and experiences in aging of older people
Abstract
Introduction. Aging is a continuous process involving organic changes and cognitive decline, and it represents a growing public health concern, with approximately 10 million new cases each year. The objective of this study was to understand a care situation involving older adults in a social foundation, focusing on cognitive status, emotional well-being, and lived experiences of aging. Methodology. A qualitative phenomenological study was conducted. Individual semi-structured interviews were recorded and transcribed. Sociodemographic data were collected, and the Mini-Mental State Examination and Yesavage Scale were applied to assess cognitive and emotional status. Results. 35 elderly people from a social foundation participated. Their narratives revealed three key categories: self-perception of aging, the importance of social integration, and self-perception of health. Cognitive assessment showed that 35% had normal cognition, 30% mild impairment, 25% moderate, and 10% severe. Regarding emotional status, 75% were within a normal range, 18% had subsyndromal depression, and 8% had established depression. Discussion. Cognitive functioning is affected not only by aging but also by family dynamics, social environment, education level, and physical activity. Early cognitive assessment that considers age, emotional state, and life experiences helps identify cognitive and emotional risks in a timely manner. Conclusions. Despite maintaining a connection with their environment, many older adults feel socially isolated due to how they are treated. However, this does not significantly affect their beliefs, values, or cognitive and emotional condition.
